Have had for some 30 years a copy of my ancestor's, Sebra N. Howard, Civil War diary. Also an article written by him after the war describing the Battle of Fort Donelson (believed written for a Newspaper). Both given me by my grandmother.

I have never seen either of these printed anywhere, and it is my belief that only 3-4 members of our family posses copies. However not sure of the long lost extended family.

I am debateing writing an article for publication useing these references, but would like to be assured that they have never been published before. Has anyone ever seen these, or heard of them???????

Second - I also am looking for info on the weapons issued to his unit. In the diary there is a reference, very early on, to a company stacking their firearms because they considered them useless. Anyone able to provide me info on weapons, when and what, that were issed to the 2nd Iowa Infantry????

I have been researching the 2nd Iowa for a number of years. Have not found references to the diary or newspaper article written by your ancestor Sebra Howard. Would very much like to see them if you are willing to share. I am transcribing diaries and letters by men who served in the 2nd Iowa that I have been able to locate from around the country.

Yes - would be willing to share the info.

Do you have any dated unit rosters showing my ancestor, or any info on the weapons issued to the 2nd?

Diary covers the very early period of the 2nd Iowa. Makes a great addition to the Tramps and Triumpths of the 2nd Iowa which begins about the time Sebra's end. Family story is responsibilty took to much time. I kinda think maybe he becan to thinj it was'nt such a great adventure. About 12-13 pgs typed.

I am really busy now, but you can contact me directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Kent,

What type of information about 2nd Iowa are you seeking? Do you have a person in mind or just general information concerning the regiment's civil war service.

We own the gun that was used by my husbands gg grandfather Hezekiah Stibbs Templeton of Fairfield,IA. It is an 1861 Enfield but unusual as it was made by Winchester so it is a mix of Enfield and Winchester. When the gun and Hezekiahs picture and discharge were passed to us,my husband actually fired it. The gun worked like a charm. He realized the age of the gun and did not fire it again for fear of damage.

I hope this helps you in your research.
