Schmucker hall, that was was previously known as Gettysburg’s Old Dorm, since it was a dormitory for seminary students, was transform during the civil war into a field hospital, and is currently housing the Adams County Historical Society’s huge and ever growing collection of photographs artifacts and documents related to the battle of Gettysburg and the counties history, is to be transformed within 5 years, it is hoped to a future museum, dedicated to its own historical significance - the influence of religion in 19th century America and the unique history of the underground railroad in Gettysburg.

Also, the Historical society wants to dedicate it to the less touched aspects of the war in the existing Gettysburg museums - like the the black community during the civil war.

The goal is to have it up and running by July 1st 2013 - the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg battle.

To date - the historical society has secured funding of $175,000 to pay for part of the planning stage, which could take up to two years. The funding is a state grant and loan program, assisting Pennsylvania’s agricultural and tourism industries.

This is part of a Gettysburg Boroughs interpretive plan, that includes the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, the Wills House Museum and the Lincoln Train Station - all of which are currently being worked on or have recently been completed.
