Dear Sue: Wow! Thank you. I just meandered back to the site for the only return since the evening of my consuming obsession about a month ago. I'll have to study it a bit more. (I just read the first page of Baily's Crossroads). For the crossroads are synonymous with the high ground in the area. Perhaps along the north side of Columbia Pike as it approaches from the area of the Long Bridge might constitute Munson's Hill. I can remember near the crossroads when we were growing up, there was an X rated drive-in. Along the north side of the Columbia Pike there was a parking garage a few of us kids would go to the top of, in an attempt to view the same. Baily's Crossroads is where Columbia Pike intersects with Virginia route seven, (7), also known as Leesburg Turnpike, which rises sharply as it transits west from Alexandria to intersect with Columbia Pike. There used to be an airport at Baily's Crossroads. The pilot who owned the property sold it to developers, (I am given to understand), who thence constructed huge residential buildings. It was one of these, in their attempt to quickly erect the high-rise, that collapsed in pancake fashion upon those working below for dozens of floors. This was not long after I had gone off to college having graduated from Yorktown High School in '72. Thanks again. - Robin.

On a modern day map of Northern Virginia, look first for the intersection of US Route 50 and VA Route 7, in the area of Seven Corners Shopping Center. A small city park near what is now Glenmore Drive and Munson's Hill Road marks what may have been the site of Stuart's headquarters at Munson's Hill. There are no historical markers to confirm this- in fact, the only such marker is historical marker T-39, located on VA Route 7, just east of Seven Corners Shopping Center.

For Sue- The highrise that collapsed was the easternmost tower of Skyline Plaza, located at Route 7, just west of the McDonald's restaurant. The collapse happened on March 3, 1972 and killed 14 workers and injured another 26. The damaged sections of the tower were demolished, and new sections erected to replace them. The cause of the collapse was the premature removal of bracing and forms on the tower's 23rd and 24th floors. Because the concrete hadn't enough time to cure properly, the weight of succeeding floors caused the concrete pillars and flooring to buckle.

FYI,

Randy
