Hello Everyone,
I'm looking for information on the Reb's (26th & 33rd) N.C. retreat across Brice's creek during the battle of New Bern. I'd like to find the area where this occured. Also, did the men retreat across the Trent R.R. bridge or boat across the Trent river. I'm not sure on this. Also can't seem to get ahold on how they finally got to Kinston.

Semper Fi,
Bob
P.S. I did some digging on the Pacific battlefield of Okinawa for anyone interested in the subject.

dear sir,it seems they might have crossed the creek not far from the trent river as they saw the bridge to new bern on fire but i dont know the location but henry burgwyn of the 26th apparently is the hero here keeping order amoung the men.scouts sent out along banks[rains had swollen creek]found several small boats, and in small groups they get across although it takes 'several' hours.as union had advanced into cs former lines and burgwyn and vance faced no more fighting this day you can surmise the crossing was closer to the trent river.before boats were secured,in attempt to get across bryce creek, three men in vance regiment drowned.vance himself to cheer men on rode into creek on his horse which promply threw him off into water the weight of his accouterments made him sink several men pulled him out to safety.once all across vance marches survivors to trenton, learning branch is in kinston they force march to that town.refferences-official records,-ironclads and columbiads, the civil war in north caolina by william r trotter 1989-the civil war on the outer banks by fred m mallison 1998-history of 26th nc by underwood-and blue and gray magazine, burnsides invasion of nc,issue 5 vol.5 1988[side bar vance later was gov of nc and brave henry burgwyn is killed 1st day at gettysburg]

Thanks, for the info! I did stumble on the "Papers of Z. Vance" and the local public libary. He gave the account I was looking for saying something like unfortunalty many threw thier rifles in the creek in order to swim over. And gave a general area to look. I'm hoping to run across one looking around the shallows with a underwater detector.
