can anyone suggest a web site that shows the elevation of the various positions of both armies during the battle ( this enquiry comes from an interested aussie )

you can down load Google Earth and do a search for the name of the battle or a nearby town. The lat/long and elevation (in feet) will be shown at the bottom of the screen. For example the elevation at "the angle" at Gettysburg (sometimes called "the high water mark of the Confederacy" ) is about 394 feet above sea level.

This one was easy because the position and land marks are so well known. Do do this for other places you will have to be familiar with the particular battlefield you are interested in (from other maps etc.)

thanks for suggestion will do as you suggest on the weekend - i find the american civil war a fasinating subject- down in australia we did not have to go through the agony of such a conflict
