i was thinking about cw movies.most are not factual silly and downright dumb.id like to list a few of my favorites in no particular order-”the tall target”dick powell’s adetective named john kennedy on the trail of thoes out to do harm to pres-elect abe lincoln on the train to dc,great film, great name for powell”s character i think it came out in 1954.”glory” is one of the best ,its not totally up to facts but great all the same.the” horse soldiers “i like alot, the names have been change to protect the innocent.a must see is hustons red badge of courage.silly ones abound bobby darin made one where he got out of a pow camp in a designer confed officers uniform-silly but he did look good[i forget the name]the mini-series the “blue and the gray” is silly but still fun to watch[sterling haydon as john brown is great]some great actors have played john brown-raymond massey, royal dano and haydon.anyway i hope people will write in and tell me their favs or least favs.in “journey to shiloh”john doucette plays braxton bragg, yes bragg is portrayed in a film and rather shown as a nice guy.i dont know what it means i just thought id mention that fact.someone could make good movies based on fact about jeb stuart, bedford forrest,us grant, lee’sretreat from gettysburg, cushing’s naval exploits or john taylor wood’s.im going to stop now as im just rambling on about nothing. kevin a kearns

I also enjoyed Glory. It was well made as a film although not spot on as far as facts go…
You didn’t mention the films that were at the bottom of your list - I am more curious about those.
hiya id like to list out a few other war films that have taken my breath away such as band of brothers, ok its a tv series but its one of the best if not best WWII film i have ever watched. also id like to point out a few gloryfied american civil war movies such as Gettysburg, did you notice that the battle on the 4th july where the confederates started to bonbard the union lines with cannon fire, did u see more than a duzzen yankies die? i didnt and when the union artillery retaliated you saw hundreds of confederates and cannons get blown up. anyway iv been looking to find a movie called ANDERSONVILLE on the internet to watch and i just cannot find it any ideas where to watch it for free if you do send me the link to savage_1987_@hotmail.co.uk thanks mike….
gettysburg had many errors-and terrible looking beards, and you mean july 3rd not the 4th.
Does anybody remember a Civil War TV series called The Americans? It came out in the early to mid-Sixties but I can’t find any listing for it on the internet.
i did not see the show but-it apparently airedfrom january 23 1961 to september 11 1961-two brothers fought against ech other durring the civil war-darryl hickman played corporal ben canfield for the union and dick davalos as corporal jeff canfield for the csa-robert redford guest starred in one episode called the coward[id like to see that one]it was a replacement in midseason for ‘riverboat’[which apparently sank]it was on nbc-id like to check this series out-all my info is from"total telivision"by alex mcneil-thanks for the question i never knew anything about this show durring the centenial
I actually thought Gettysburgh was a very fine film, well acted and showed the horrors of war very well. An old favourite of mine was always the movie "Shenandoah" starring James Stewart. They dont have actors like him anymore sadly,a bygone era of great stars.
shenandoah is a good film it just strecthes the facts a little but alot of people do love it-jimmy stewart is one of my favorites.he made one in 1937 or 38 where he goes off to war against his preacher fathers wishes and gets lectured by abraham lincoln himself when his mother writes to the president asking about her son since shes had no word from him-mom is beulah bondi[his mom from its a wonderfull life] and dad is the great walter huston.it sounds hokey but actually its a very good film-the name is ‘of human hearts’ i remember ward bond plays a unruly church goer-he later will play major seth adams on tvs wagon train-the last episode he finished i believe was ‘the colten craven story’which is about shiloh-william sherman is played by john wayne that episode itself was directed by john ford both of whom were very close to bond, but thats a different story
