in my opinion the following books i found to be well written and informative-on campaigns and battles,’to appomattox’ by burke davis when i first read this many years ago it was all i could do not to grab a musket and help lee out any way i could.how about ’stonewall jackson at cedar mountain’by robert krick it the way i wish i could write and research a story of a battle.col wilbur nye’s “here comes the rebels”is a great one.iguess im thinking only of the eastern battles this time around.blood on the moon by edward steeres cut through all the hearsay and malarkey on the lincoln assasination[mudd’s not as innocent as you think]great reference works include the ever brilliant’ dyers compedium,’roger hunts ‘colonels in blue’.i would like to hear from you folks out there on what books you have enjoyed reading and if any changed the way you have thought about the civil war. kevin a kearns

Fixed :-) Blood on the Moon is such a great title. I will look for that one, as I haven’t read it as of yet.
blood on the moon is a great title, steeres book might really be the best one volume study of what booth did.i think the title is something walt witman wrote.there is also a 1947 0r 1948 black and white western starring robert mitchum and robert preston with the same title highly reccomend that film[nothing to do with civil war]
I might just have to have blood on the moon month and read both the book and see the movie :-)
Robertson’s biography on Stonewall Jackson is a great book. He is also very kind in answering questions, signing books, etc. about the war.
An Honorable Defeat by William Davis is also great.
For a soldier’s perspective: The Letter’s of Brevet Major General Alvin C. Voris is a tough read, but excellent read for details of many campaigns and battles. Voris enlisted as a private, rose to the rank of Brevet Major general. He wrote over 450 letters to his wife throughout the war.
