jean dominique cassini concieved a way to estimate muzzle velocity for small arms-a large piece of lead suspended from two or four wires he measured the extant of the swing caused by the impact of the bullet on the pendulum-then from the weight of the bullet, the weight of the pendulum and the extent or amplitude of the swing, one could calculate the impact velocity and infer the muzzle verlocity.today of course easier ways must be out there but i really dont know alot about this i got the above info from"ballistics"copywright 1971 by doubleday inc.a science program phamlet by science service washington dc i hope this helps you find out more-google ballistics and see what comes up
