The list is almost endless. If you are a true novice, and haven't read anything beyond the textbook entries from high school history, then Bruce Catton's three volume history is a good start -- he was a journalist by trade, and it shows in his narrative skill; highly readable for the novice. MacPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom" is an excellent one volume choice. You won't go wrong if you can find a good used copy of the companion book to Ken Burns' classic PBS TV series. Any of these can help you get the basic context, indispensable in understanding the more complex studies. Shelby Foote's 3 volume "Narrative" is a bit daunting for the true beginner, and it's heavily slanted toward the Confederate POV. It's better saved for after you've gotten a good basic grasp of what went on. "Killer Angels" is an excellent novel, but again, you'd get more out of it if you had a good basic understanding of the history behind it. Of course all of this is MHO, but reading about the civil war is my passion.

"Stonewall's Cannoneer" is an interesting choice, and I haven't read it yet. There's no rush reading any book on the civil war. Take your time, read when the mood, interest and opportunity are right, and do it at a pace that works for you. One of the joys of reading about the civil war is slowly building on what you've learned before. If you ever have questions, don't hesitate to ask, I'm more than willing to share whatever I've managed to learn.
