Family research and Genealogy are becoming a wide spread hobby.

Awareness to the importance and interest of preservation and knowledge of family history is everywhere.

There are Genealogy Conference for that help people research the history of their families through the actions of family members.

For example there was a genealogy conference in Sevier County Tennessee about a year ago.the area is steeped in history, because a lot of people came to fight in the revolution at Kings mountain, which was a turning point  in the  revolutions  outcome.

a lot of families stayed to settle in Seviers county and because of over population people relocated to Alabama Oklamona and eventually Texas.

There is a personal interest aspect to it as well as historical importance. A lot of the records have been destroyed in fires and so on and without private peoples family history records a lot of the information would have been lost forever.

There are also programs in local libraries for kids, which I think is wonderful, because this is such a good way to bring history closer to the child and in this way enhance the interest in it.

To make this easier there is an abundance of software one can acquire to make keeping records easier.
