What were some of the negative effects surviving soldiers came home with after the Civil War? Did shell shock exist then?

i would say yes to shell shock for some, the civil war was for many the big experiance of their lives so its not hard to imagine the trauma it caused, for the wounded better drugs or i should say better excess to drugs such as morphine gave america addicts on a larger scale seen before others might know more than me on this subject.the southern soldiers faced all of the above plus a devastated economy and landscape.great question, the war was not all that fun,i always wonder what the vets would think of renacting battles and renacting in general.

There are documented cases of combat fatigue, as you suggest. Other illnesses brought back from the war were consumption as my ancestor did, possible blindness from adult measles cases, lingering effects of dyssentery, and of course syphillis and gonnorhea. Often wounds carried lingering effects too.
