How were the slave tags attached to cothing? Were there safety pins back then?

im not sure,they were probally used when slaves were sold-clipped on to clothing.around where they lived probally didnt need tags,travelling distances away for what ever reasons they would have had papers on them saying thier status,who owned them our if they were freedman,i will try to find out more.
