Hello,

I recently came across an 1890 Veteran's Schedule listing in Brooklyn, NY, of one of my 3rd Great-Grandfathers.

I found that he was a sailor, and that he served aboard what appears to be the "USS Arletta": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Arletta_%281860%29 and the "USS Orvetta": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Orvetta_%281861%29.
His rank is listed as "Mate", and he served for 7 months and 15 days... 16 Jan 1862 to 31 Aug 1862.

Could someone please explain what the rank, "Mate", means? What would he have done aboard these ships?

Also, does anyone know where I'd be able to find more detailed information about his service? I've found lots of resources for soldiers, but not much about sailors.

Here's a photo of the Vets Schedule:

Any help with this would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Mark
