seems not likely, given the union sucesses and no foreign power reconition. why would the dems feel the need?by nov 64 the union armies were very powerfull not to mention the us navy.all killed before would have died in vain.robert e lee kept the confederacy afloat alone.the csa wouldnt go for anything but independence but had nothing to bargin with-even lee was hemmed in having to defend richmond and petersburg-no mobility, only a matter of time.plus mac said if elected he would see the war to its end

i actually got the idea for my question from a book calle "lethal glory" by phillip katcher which he writes -
"FLYING A CONFEDERATE FLAG IN THE NORTH COULD BOOST THE HOPES FOR EUROPEAN RECOGNITION AND DAMPEN MORALE
A SUCCESSFUL RAID IN 1863 COULD HELP TURN THE 1864 ELECTION AGAINST PRESEDENT LINCOLN AND HIS REPUBLICAN PARTY AND BRING PEACE-PARTY DEMOCRATS INTO POWER
THERE WOULD BE A STRONG POSSIBILTYTHAT A PEACE TREATY RECOGNIZING THE CONFEDERATE STATES AS AN INDEPENDENT NATION COULD BE SIGNED WITH A DEMOCRATIC GOVERMENT "

Probably would have taken more than a "successful raid" Winning a major battle on northern soil though might have done the trick (exactly what Lee was gambling on)
