The same reason all the rest did.

The Southern people felt their financial well being and even their physical existence was threatened by the federal government. The actions of that government over the following 20 years proved their fears well founded.

answer # 3 is wrong, at least partially, but not for the reason you mention. North Carolina was NOT among the first seven "deep South" States to secede. These were (in order)South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas.

Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina seceded after lincoln called for 300,000 troops to "put down the rebellion" (a de facto declaration of war on the Seceded States)
