confederates under harry heth pushed aside union cavarly early morning on july 1st  1863 they advance towards the town of gettysburg.along willoughby run a small stream, union infantry under john reynolds fights them to a standstill at least for awhile.its a nasty battle csa general james j archer is captured, reynolds is killed the fighting moves on twards a lutheren seminaryand further north in a railroad cut and other areas destined to become part of the lore of the battle of gettysburg, the land south of the run along chambersburg pike will be preserved in the national park saved forever.north of the stream will be a different story-core battle areas not saved eventually in 1948 become a country club and this club sprouts a golf course swimming pool and tennis courts.at some point decline sets in to where by 2008 it is siezed by creditors and goes on the aution block for 2.9 million dollars[i think it was around that sum]it does not sell and here in 2009 an article appears in the gettysburg times reads that the park getting some funds this year might be able to buy the land the club sits on.i hope they can and will buy it.it sit within parks boundries[i dont understand how that works if it within the boundries why dont they already own it?anyway] goodluck, the paper said if they get it they might keep the recreational areas to use somehow. at least no subdivisions.goodluck again.save the land it would be a fitting tribute to those who fought there.   kevin a kearns

I didn’t know about this. If my memory is correct, we have already discussed on a previous post about the need to conserve and educate - obviously Gettysburg is one of those places where subdivisions should be a definite no no.
  • kakman responded:
yes we discussed preservation- i was on a rant about saving something because it hallowed ground. i want things saved because i like to visit civil war sites, but i am also of the opinion people have the right to do with their land as they see fit[at least legal things]no i dont want to see subdivisions on or near battlesites but i get over it and take photos anyway.they have an opportunity to buy some land and save it-go for it.

    We are in agreement again.
