The North came very close to losing the war anyway. Grant and Lee dug In in a stalemate. Lincoln would have lost the election and McClellan would have withdrawn the troops, but Sherman just in time beat Atlanta and tore up railroads and feed his army off the land and this made the Confederates dug in above Richmond go from some supplies to no supplies.
